Where can you find the highest flagpole in the Philippines? It's at the historic Rizal Park in Manila. It's called the Independence Flagpole and stands at 107 meters, 58 meters shorter than the world's highest flagpole (located in Tajikistan). This flagstaff commemorates the celebration of the country's independence from the United States on July 4, 1946. The Philippines became a colony of the U.S. after the Philippine-American war, as the latter refused to recognize the country's independence from the Spanish colonial government.  Spain, in the face of an embarrassing defeat from Filipino freedom fighters in the 1898 revolution, sold the Philippine Islands to the U.S. through the Treaty of Paris.

The Philippine Flag was conceptualized by
former Philippine President Emilio Aguinaldo.
